Like The 30-30?

My first Lever Rifle. The old standby 30-30. Still a very popular hunting rifle in the deep woods of Oregon.

Love it! I keep seeing rifles like this and I love'em. I may have to step away from the AR carbine types for a purchase or 2 and buy one of those!

There has probly been more deer taken with the 30-30 than any other round over the course of history!

I really like the lever action 30-30's. Don't have one yet, but I do have a clip fed bolt action that I really love shooting. It's a really small gun comparatively speaking(just slightly bigger that a Ruger 10/22), so after about 5 or 6 shots I have to put it down as it kills my shoulder. But I just love shooting it.

Maybe you're not holding it tight enough into your shoulder. Two possible remedies other than that; (1) Recoil pad, (2) Shooting jacket with padded shoulder.

Holding tight helps, but I"ve got arthritis in my shoulder that really "feels" the recoil. I got one of those pads that you slip one arm through and snap a web belt around your chest and hook one to your belt in the back. It tames the recoil just fine.

I've got a Winchester 94 30-30, bought used just a few weeks ago, and am getting it ready for hunting season. It's had the stock and forend stripped and just got some walnut stain and will get some spar varnish tomorrow. Also the fitting areas will get a few light coats of spray varnish. While stripped down, it's gotten a good cleaning with Hoppes Elite and a douse of Barricade. The only rust was inside the magazine tube and a little under the tang. That's all cleaned up now and the Barricade is leaving a skin of protectant.

The 94 came with a Bushnell scope, a little too big for an offset sidemount scope (the 84 has top ejection, so the scope needs to be either offset of sidemounted). I found an old Weaver K3 fixed power steel tube scout style scope that should work fine and will look appropriate on a 1969 rifle. It should arrive by Friday or so. I'll keep the Bushnell in case I find a bolt action .270 next time some extra money comes my way, it's not an expensive scope, but it seemed to have a good clear view.

When I get it ready, in maybe a week, I'll take some pictures and put them up.

I used a borrowed lever gun to hunt with some years ago, a Marlin 444, but this is my first to own and I love it.

MY first lever action. Walked into local shop a few years ago with my youngest son.The owner just took in four long guns the day before, one was older Win 94 30-30.How much I asked,well since I didn't have time to clean it up at all,mmmmm 85.00,he says. I say SOLD. with a little clesning up we got a fine shooting 30-30.
