I don't know what's gotten into me, but all the sudden I really want a .300 winchester mag rifle. Something about have 1 MOA at 1000 yards really appeals to me. One thing that concerns me, is recoil. The biggest rifle I've shot is a .308...hardly the kick I can imagine from the .300 winmag. Has anyone shot one of these? What's the recoil like? Should I skip the idea of the .300 win mag? I mean I may hunt elk/moose sometime, but not anytime soon.

I've shot alot of weapons in my day. I've noticed that .308 is about my limit. I only have the Mauser 98k in 7.92mm and the M1 Garand .30-06 because it's historical.
I shot a M82 Barrett before and that had less kick than I had when I put a few rounds downrange with a .300 Win Mag. It does hurt after you shoot it. It literally left a bruise on my shoulder after only 20 rounds. Compared to shooting 7.62mm/.308's all day, the .50 S&W and the .300 Win Mag is brutal. It fuckin' hurts afterwards.
I humbly suggest that you get a good .30-06 for hunting or use a .308 and specialized rounds like a Extreme Shock. You will get about the same ballistic qualities even though trajectory is sacificed a little. Besides, those rounds are much cheaper to get anyway.
I don't hunt game so I don't have much experience with that but I do hunt people on occasions and 7.62mm/.308 is about all I'd ever want to shoot with. .308 & .30-06 rounds have been around for a long time and all the ballistic data is already documented and archived for anyone to find easily.
I'll have to agree with Sinatra here...
.308 (aka 7.62 NATO) is a very common, well proven round with lots of versatility and ballistic data readily available. It can use a wide variety of projectiles so a bullet can be configured for just about any situation.
You want to buy the last rifle you will ever want and/or need?

Here is my HS Precision STR in .308 Winchester with Swarovski Habicht PV-S 6-24x50. It is a joy to shoot and is dead on at 200 yards.

Several years ago I owned a Remington 700 BDL chambered in .300 winchester mag.
I absoloutley adored it. However hard times beset upon me and I had to part with it and my .22-250 with a bull barrel.
The high recoil was the best part of it.
The accuracy was laser-like.
The action was smooth as snail snot on a glass knob.
The only other caliber I personally would consider would be the 7mm Reminton Ultra magnum.
I would not hesitate to get one at all.
As a matter of fact, im thinking of picking one up quite soon.
