I think I'm going to have to send my newest 1911 back to Spingfield. The good news is I know they'll make good on it and not give me any crap for extended periods of time.

First thing I do when I buy a new gun is strip it and clean it thoroughly. Then take a range trip shortly after, then clean it thoroughly again. With this particular gun I had problems just getting it apart!

First, one of the grip screws was stripped. I had a hell of a time getting that out. Then the recoil spring plug was very hard to get out. They usually pop right out.

Now the reason I feel I'm going to have to send it back is because I put a magazine in it yesterday and racked the slide. When I did it stayed open and wouldn't feed a round. I tried this several times and each time it got stuck.

On the plus side though I am going to ask for some custom features to be added when I send it back in.

I don't know dash, why get custom features when you are not 100% sure the gun is reliable? I would wait until after they fix your issues just so you know it's worth adding custom features imo. It sounds as if your springer is very "tight"...?

Well, "custom features" may be a little overstated. I'm just going to have them put an ambi safety on it and maybe tritium sights. It came with standard sights. May even go with a TFO on the front.

I'm sure it's tight and needs to be fired, but it needs to feed ammo before it can be. It looks like the feed ramp may need a little adjusting. I'm going to mention the other things just to avoid any possible future issues with it.

That is a bummer,,thats the one thing I don't understand about 1911's, 500 or 2000.00 you spend on it and it might not work out the box,,don't they function test these 1911's?

I understand any gun might not work out of the box but 1911's are more than known for this ,,it's like they build them ship'em out with a note if it doesn't work send it back and we'll fix,,why don't they just make work in the beginning.

Awesome guns just don't understand there high level of lack anything out of the box.

It seems rather uncommon to me really. I mean there is a break in period, which I believe probably goes for most guns. Even the all mighty Glocks aren't 100% problem free 100% of the time. Of all of my 1911's this is only my second to have any issues at all. You'll likely run into a pissy 1911 or 2 if you buy a lot of them. Now if you have problems with 3 or 4 out of 5 that would be a huge issue.

I've had problems with Beretta and Glock as well. One night at IDPA, and I'm not making this up, every person shooting Glock had issue with them. It was really odd.

I think 1911's are probably a little more tempermental because they are a bit more fine tuned than most guns. It certainly doesn't turn me off of them that's for sure. I still want MORE!!

Like I said all guns may not function out of the box,,these just seem to be more finicky or can be more finicky out of the box.
I want to add one to the collection again,, I call bullshit on functions tests though,,I think they just toss a spent case in the gun case and say it was tested,,lol

I think they just test fire one round. If it fires and ejects it's good to go. Not sure how thorough the testing is though, or if there are other tests they do... I wouldn't think so since I probably wouldn't have let this one go out the door as is.

I'll load up a mag with different rounds and see if that changes anything...

Oh I don't know, Niner... Getting the safety off can be trying, but for some reason I love stripping a 1911. :)

I loaded up a mag with different ammo and it loaded just fine. Guess I need to get to the range and put a few hundred down range before I start making calls to the factory. It doesn't seem to like Speer Gold Dot JHP though.

1911's are a bit high maintenance! Oddly, the only 1911 I ever had that worked perfectly out of the box was my Taurus PT1911. I used to have a Springfield GI and a RIA and both needed trigger polishing and feed ramp work to function properly. Nothing major in the world of 1911's, but still...I'm just sayin' :D
