I developed a way to isolate you after a few years on night shift.
Put tin foil on your Bedroom window. It will absolutely keep it dark in the room and turn on a fan to create "white noise" to kill the sounds of birds. Eventually you will feel the Mushroom Effect...fed alot of shit and kept in the dark.

Geez! That is about the time I am getting up to exercise. I refuse to get up any earlier than that except to go fishing! I haven't seen 0500 through the night for a LONG LONG time.

I've got some sort of insomnia, restlessness or something. I hate sleeping, yet I can't stand being woke up.
My sleep pattern is completely whacked! Right now I'm passing out at around 7am. That will get later and later until I'm waking up at 7am. The key word is "pass out". I literally have to pass out to go to sleep.
There's times when I can't sleep at all. I'll lay down and just toss and turn for a while then I'll get up wonder around aimlessly until I finally shutdown.

I hear ya Dash its a form of insomnia, I have the "can't fall asleep" version same as you do it appears. Some people have trouble staying asleep(no problem staying asleep for me, for me it's not being able to turn off my brain as is for most people that suffer from insomnia). You know what really sucks...going to work all day, being tired after work but staying up untill about 11pm when you say to yourself ok it's time I should be trying to fall asleep now, and just laying in bed all night not falling asleep at all just laying there. And then the alarm goes off and you have to go to work on no sleep at all, hell you already worked one day, now you got to work another without any sleep it's horrible:pissed:. I quit like 3 jobs because of that, Lunesta works good for me, try that. However I'm sure over time those pills don't work anymore, but ambien sucks ass it just makes you feel drunk for 30 mins and then it wears off.

Every so often I'll take a couple Tylenol PM's. It works and is non-addictive... But I really don't like taking anything. I hate pills, well any drug really, OTC or prescribed.

Dash-I used to do the same thing. A habit that I somehow ended up forming while in college. Anyway, I finally solved it by deciding what time I wanted to go to bed and did a full hour of vigorous exercise two hours before that time. I mean REALLY work hard. Run, bike, lift weights, whatever (I used to box the heavy bag) it takes to get you physically tired. Then, after a shower and under an hour to calm down, my body would finally just shut the brain down and I would crash. If exercise only amps you up and keeps you up, force yourself to get up early and exercise. By the time bedtime comes around again, you will be ready. If that doesn't work, talk to your doc, there are a lot of drug options out there.
Good luck.

After nine years of infantry life, I've found that Tylenol's were like "light warfighter candy". You guys pretty much know about my war wounds. A busted back, trick knee and I caught one ricochet in the right shoulder and a graze wound in the inside right calf.
After numerous shots in both my back and knees. I was still in a state of agony for most of 2003. I have to take two 10 milligrams of Lortab and a Temazepam to go to sleep. After the past couple of years I've developed a tolerance for them and now have to add a few OTC sleeping pills and Benadryl too the plethora mix from hell.
It's kinda like starting to use a Chapstick. Once you start, you can't stop.
