My daughter just called with her need for this semesters books 3 used books will cost me $140.00 and this is real piss me off one. a new Business Statistics Books (1 freaking book) $200.00. To the best of my knowledge Statistics haven;t changed much in afew thousand years and I can see much major difference in Business Statistics. So what the fuck. Let's just price education out of doable levels. She is in her 3rd year at what I call a BS Faith based University. Why BS because that is what they are full off. faith and all is fine but for 31K a year in tuition I want a first rate education for her and I don't see it there. Actually asked the VP several question over the years and here is how it goes. I spent 10 years working and going to Unioversities (Temple, Harvard and UofP) for my PhD so I am familiar witrh how they work

Me; Why does your tuition cost about as much as an Ivy League School?
VP; We are a faith based School

Me; Well my daughter is aenemic and you let her give blood, then had the ambulance companies (they called 2) over bill me even when one was covered by my insurance. Can you please explain this Ms VP
VP; We are a faith based School

Me; How do you let a 17 yo freshman declare a double major?
VP; We are a faith based school

Me; Why is community service mandatory for her to get a grade in a mandatory course? Which is only mandatory at this school and non transferable to any other University. It was called the Bible in the 20th Century and did not count as a Philosophy or other course.
VP; Now everyone repeat after me "We are a faith based School"

All of these are true examples of conversations I had with this VP of the School.

200 fucking dollars for a book! to use for 14 weeks is ridiculous.

Ya when I went the thing that pissed me off bad was that every semester or 2 they change books!!! They do it on purpose, so the student cannot buy a used book from a classmate, he has to spend 150-200 bucks for a single stupid ass book, it's nuts. And I really love it when you go to the buy back program at the end of the semester and they won't buy back your book since they won't be using it no more:poke: used to piss me off, I'm glad I am done with college, it's a business they run just like any other...

Oh boy! Did you ever open a can of worms!

When I started my going back to school thing I decided to go to an 18 month "college" to get hands on training, then go to a real school for the paper.

I ended up walking out of the 18 month shithole. If there's any young guys here thinking of going to one of these DON'T! Go to a real accredited school and thank me later...Trust me!

Here's a $13,000 dollar school run by morons. My dept., the electronics dept, was run by a retired Army guy. Sawed off mousey little fuck that he was I doubt he was anything special, but he would only hire retired military to teach the classes.

Imagine retired military running a civilian facility. Needless to say being treated like an enlisted soldier didn't work out very well.

I walked out one day because of one the instructors. Fresh out of the Marines and dumb as a box of broken bricks. He smarted off to me one day and we got into a little spat and he tried having me kicked out... A few months later he screwed things up for a class and it had to be canceled so I felt I was wasting my time and just left.

Here's the kick in the head part. I had to start paying for the student loans. Oh yeah, they make it sound all good and easy to manage in the recruiters office talking about the government and Pell grants and how you only have to pay back a small portion of it and all that bullshit... Making sound real sweet.

What they don't tell you is that $6000 you do have to pay will never get paid off if you try to pay monthly!

I paid $200 a month every month on a $50 payment. Then eventually I was paying $400 and $500 a month to get it paid off quicker. 3 years later I noticed the balance wasn't dropping. So I watched it for a few more months and sure enough it was only dropping a few dollars a month.

Now $400 a month over 3 years is well over$14k. Plus I had been paying $200 a month for about a year.

4 years I paid on this piece of shit $6k loan. The cost of the school was only $13k. So those grants I didn't have to pay back sure as hell cost me enough.

I finally called the Dept Of Ed to see what was going on. She told me I wasn't even paying $20 toward the principle, it was a all interest. That absolutely disgusted me!

I asked her for a payoff balance and just put it on my credit card. Didn't want to, but the way that loan was going I most likely would have paid over $25k for that garbage.

Look on the bright side of that single $200 book.
When she goes to sell it back at the end of the semester, it will be worth $14.
(so its not a total loss)
TGA (total global anarchy)
COMWEC (COmplete Meltdown of WEstern Civilization)
doesn't matter what you call it... it just needs to get here in a hurry to put this ship we call earth back on an even keel...

and watch out on over payments.... unless you specify that the overage goes SPECIFICALLY TO PRINCIPLE they will simply treat that as an early payment and yes, X-principle and 95X-intrest
fucking little game financial institutions play to keep the masses oppressed.

HH:
Right when your daughter can start looking/buying her books for the semester, have he goto the bookstore, and write down the ISDN numbers. They are located right where the upc code it.

goto www.half.com or www.amazon.com and order your books from there. You will save thousands of dollars. Me & my faince both did.

On a further note I have to say it's pretty awesome of you to be paying for her tuition. My parents stuck me with the bill and here I am with $110,000 in student loans to pay off. :( Just think, I'll be 54 when I'm done paying for MY college.

ksuchewie, thanks for the lead on www.half.com we tried amazon and she was getting no deal there. She also tried several other sites. I think she sent me a list of about 20. Problem is timing as well. Classes started last thursday and they want the books this week so no shipping time. I had a Peruvian Archaeology class one year when the text book was 75.00 and the work bork was another 35.00 (this was back in 79 or 80) luckily the Author was our professor and one of my grad committee chairs. He arranghed for the university to copy his original and gave it to us for cost of copying (about 22 bucks for both)

Since education, books, room & board has gone up significantly since we attended...I went with a company overseas and while I was there they paid for my online education so I could get my MA. I got two semesters in...around 28 hours at $300 an hour and it was all free.

In my estimation, it cost less than going to a school in a traditional manner.

Jesus Ksuchewie, what kind of freaking degree are you getting:lol:

Just a normal bachelors degree is all I got.

I had to pay for everything... tuition, food, rent, clothes, gas, etc.. It all adds up really fast and min wage jobs don't cover enough expenses in college. Yes I worked all through college too, I didn't just sit on my butt and party everynight.

I pay $850/mo for my student loans. What really pisses me off is every month about $750 of that payment is just for interest. Right now money is getting tight because my fiance is having a hard time finding a good job. If I didn't have my student loan payment I could be able to buy a freakin house in a couple years. If any of you guys ever win the lottery, please remember me and help :)

Hopefully I'll get my promotion this week and my fiance will find a job soon.

ksuchewie,

You don't need the promotion... you more like need to win the lottery...

That magnitude of interest amounts to legal loan sharking... I can imagine the Mafia would have offered you better terms on the money.

you more likely need to win the lottery...

yeah, tell me about it. I tried when the powerball was really high a few weeks ago.

I've often thought about making a webpage to basically beg people for a dollar or two and show them how they're "donation" helps. But after talking to a few people, I felt that I would be spending more on the webspace than getting in donation because people would think I need to work harder or get a better job. Well I earn more $ than the average person, and am still having a hard time making ends meet.

Basically this has caused a lot of anger towards my parents. Growing up they put it in my head that I had to goto college to make good money and get a good job. But they didn't pay for anything so now I'm stuck with the bill. Last year my Dad bought a new car that he didn't need...and I'm thinking, gee, I could really use that money...

Trust me, ksuchewie, the relationship between having a college/university degree and financial success is grossly exaggerated.

The colleges and universities do their own fair share to perpetuate this myth. It's to their direct benefit... they must have students or face not being relevant. That's probably their biggest fear as an institution. It means no more funding, no more school.

Now, that said, I'll just tell you that having earned your degree is a huge accomplishment. It will get your feet into doors that might otherwise be shut. Past that it guarantees nothing... other than solicitations from your alumni association.

One of the biggest adjustments most college grads have to make post graduation is facing the reality that they must then learn how to make a living. The institutions of higher learning do terrible in that regard.

You have a mountain of student loan debt... please don't blame your parents directly for that. Yes, it would have been gravy if they had helped you financially then or even now, but at this point in your life, you've got to let go and move on.

I truly hope you can work on this deal with your parents... life's too short to let any manner of anger and resentment come between you and them. Please trust me on that one also.

Look at this on the positive side... you struggled your way thru four years of intensive study to earn a degree and you did this all by yourself. Nobody helped you... true... but that's the point. You did it. Quite an achievement in my book!

On a side note, are there not jobs (think public sector here...) where student loan debt is partially or entirely forgiven? Of course, none of those career choices may be compatible with your degree and major... but it was a thought that flashed through my mind.

This one is gonna hurt... the real ass kicker is in a few years when you run into one of your old high school classmates who didn't grace the doors of a college... someone who just simply entered the "labor force" after high school... and they're earning 2x or 4x more each year than you. This in some technical job somewhere or a guy who went into construction and now owns his own company. These deals can chap your butt and seriously make you question the wisdom of attending that university.

Trust me on this too... because it's gonna happen.

$200 for a book eh Wayne. The kicker is when you find out that the instructor is the AUTHOR! And the bastard has tenure!
I really enjoy it when the alumni association calls asking for money. I would rather use cash for firewood than give those bloodsuckers another cent.

At least they could give a reach around.:crossbones:
